Required Undergraduate ancillary Courses

In addition to the 30 hours of major courses, MCDB requires the following ancillary courses in Chemistry, Calculus, and Physics. These are subject to less stringent Departmental rules: namely, a GPA of 2.000 is required (based on the most recent time a course is taken) and isolated D grades are allowed. (See Minimum Grade) Note: these less stringent rules apply only to the MCDB major. MCDB/BCHM double majors must satisfy all requirements set by A&S and by the Dept. of Chemistry & Biochemistry for completion of the BCHM major.

General Chemistry - 10 Hours:

CHEM 1111
General Chemistry I
5 hours (Fall, Spring, Summer)

PLUS

CHEM 1131
General Chemistry II
5 hours (Fall, Spring, Summer)

Students with no high school chemistry or a weak background in chemistry should take CHEM 1021, Introductory Chemistry, before attempting General Chemistry.

Students who would like an additional challenge are encouraged to take Honors General Chemistry, CHEM 1151 and 1171.

Students transferring from Engineering may substitute CHEM 1211 and CHEN 1221 for CHEM 1111, but must still take CHEM 1131.

Organic Chemistry - 10 Hours:

CHEM 3311
Organic Chemistry I
4 hours (Fall, Spring, Summer)

PLUS

CHEM 3321
Organic Chemistry Lab I
1 hour (Fall, Spring, Summer)

General Chemistry II must be completed as a prerequisite for Organic Chemistry I.

CHEM 3351 Organic Chemistry for Majors I is recommended for BCHM double majors, and may be taken by any MCDB major as alternatives to CHEM 3311. The Chemistry majors' labs, CHEM 3361 is also an acceptable alternative, but involves two labs per week instead of one.

Biochemistry - 3 Hours:

CHEM 4611
Survey of Biochemistry
3 hours(Fall and Summer)

OR

CHEM 4711
General Biochemistry I
3 hours (Spring)

Prerequisite: Organic Chemistry II. A minimum grade of C- in CHEM 4711 is required for the MCDB major.

MATH - 5 Hours:

MATH 1300
Calculus and Analytical Geometry 1
5 hours (Fall, Spring, Summer)

OR

MATH 1310
Calculus 1 with Biology Applications
5 hours(Fall, Spring)

APPM 1350, Engineering Calculus I, or MATH 1310, Calculus with Computer Applications, are acceptable alternatives. However, BCHM double majors should not take MATH 1310 (or 1320).

All of the calculus courses require algebra and trigonometry as prerequisites. Students with weak backgrounds should first take MATH 1150 or MATH1011, College Algebra and MATH1021, College Trigonometry. Do not take MATH modules 1050 — 1100, which are terminal courses for business and social science students.

The MCDB major only requires one semester of calculus. However, students planning to take calculus-based physics will need Calculus II (Math 2300) for PHYS 1120.

*BCHM double majors and others planning to take Physical Chemistry (recommended for graduate school) also must take Calculus III (MATH 2400).

Physics - 9 or 10 Hours:

General Physics I and II with Lab
9-10 hours (Fall, Spring, Summer)

MCDB majors may select algebra-based General Physics, PHYS 2010/2020 (10 hours) or calculus-based General Physics, PHYS 1110/1120/1140 (9 hours). PHYS 1120 requires Calculus II. PHYS 1110/2020 is also acceptable.

*BCHM double majors and other students planning to take Physical Chemistry must take calculus-based physics.
