Teaching

Two semesters of teaching are required of all graduate students. Students usually fulfill this teaching requirement during their first year. Exceptions may be granted by COGSA, for good cause, in response to a written request submitted prior to July 1 for the following academic year. In place of teaching in MCDB courses, service on the Hughes Initiative Science Squad is acceptable as the teaching component of the degree program, and prior teaching experience may be acceptable in lieu of one semester of teaching in MCDB. However, either of these substitutions requires approval of COGSA in the first year or of COGSA and the thesis advisor in subsequent years. Performance as a teaching assistant will be evaluated by the course supervisor in a letter that becomes part of the student's record.
