Receiving Mice from other Institutions

Receiving mice from other institutions
On getting a commitment from an investigator at another institution that they will ship mice to you, you should contact Gail Ackermann,
2-6317ackermag@stripe.colorado.edu, AND Dr. Al Petkus, 2-3411
apetkus@clipr.colorado.edu

Provide them with:
1) an anticipated shipment date
2) information regarding any known or suspected health issues with the mice to be shipped (e.g. pathogens known to be endemic in that facility)
3) email and telephone contacts for the veterinarian at that institution
and the person who will be shipping the mice

Here's what needs to happen prior to shipment of mice to MCDB from
anyone other than an approved vendor:

1) The vet at the shipping institution will need to provide a health
report to Dr. Petkus.

2) There will need to be space in the MCDB Transgenic Facility
Quarantine Area to house the mice on their receipt. Thus, you MUST have permission from Gail prior to the shipping of the mice, otherwise there might not be a place to house them when they arrive.

3) On arrival, the mouse strain(s) will be housed in the quarantine
area. The strain(s) will be re-derived by transfer of blastocyst stage
embryos into foster females present inside the Transgenic Facility. This takes time but is the safest method for ensuring that pathogens are not brought into the facility. Gail Ackermann can perform the embryo transfers as a service. The cost for transferring a single line is $170. Additional mice may need to be purchased for superovulation and breeding to the mice you have received.

Note that given this procedure, having multiple males shipped to you can be advantageous.

Note also that it is important to have the details of the test you will
use to determine the strain type (transgenic or knockout) worked out.

During the breeding time in quarantine, any mice not used for
rederivation may be available for experiments that involve removal of
mice from the facility.
Please note that the procedure for receiving mice from approved vendors (Jax, Harlan) is different.
