SPEAKERS: Mike Yarus (MCDB; Yarus lab) and Geoffrey C. Peterson (APPM; Lladser research group)
* TITLE: Fairness assessment via Poissonization
* ABSTRACT: We use Poissonization techniques to address the following scientific question of a combinatorial nature: can one determine, with a handful amount of data, if there is a chirality preference for RNA amino acid binding? The technical difficulty of this problem is the small sample size, for which classical statistical methods usually result inconclusive. Instead, by modeling the data collected as samples—with replacement—from an urn with colored balls, if we embed the observed colors into a homogeneous Poisson process then we can construct accurate statistics for the chirality-bias that lead e.g. to almost exact confidence intervals for this unknown parameter. The research is in collaboration with Manuel Lladser's research group (APPM) and the Mike Yarus’s lab (MCDB), and it has been partially supported by the NIH grant 3R01GM048080-13S1.
Pizza and drinks will be provided for the talks. Hope to see you all there!
